Pair of Mid-19th C. Botanical Hand-Coloured Prints
This is a lovely pair of hand-coloured botanical prints from the mid 19th Century. They were originally bound in a volume from the "Paxton's Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants" the Fourteenth Volume. Published in London: Published for the Proprietors, by William S. Orr & Co., Paternoster Row dated MDCCCXLVIII. The left print is marked "S. Holden. del & Lith., probably the company the printed the lithograph. It is titled "Ansellia Africana", a type of orchid. The print on the right is not marked by the lithography company and is titled "Dendrobium amplum", also a type of orchid. The left print is in excellent condition; the right print is in good condition with some minor discoloration on the background and a tiny pinhead-size indentation midway down on the right margin about one inch in from the border. Both have cream-colored mats and are unframed. Include is an original sheet from the bound volume on the Dendrobium Amplum, specifying the cless as Gynandria, order as Monandria and the natural order as Orchidaceae. It is a species which originated in the East Indies in October of 1839.
